Homework

Our homework is based around our topic and is in a ‘Take Away Menu’ format.  Please choose 1 starter, 1 main and 1 dessert and complete these at your convenience over the half term.  The tasks are linked to our curriculum and also set with personal development and community spirit in mind.  Here is an example:

In addition, we have a number of online resources, to help you to practise your skills when at home.  These are linked below.  Please see your teacher if you need a reminder of your log in.

Spellings

In year 6, we use our own Easington Colliery Primary School method of teaching spelling.  Target- Train- Teach is a bespoke programme, which identifies the spellings that pupils are struggling with (Target) and ‘re-trains’ pupils working on the methodology/ concept behind that particular spelling rule (Train) and finally we teach pupils (Teach) to reverse a habitual spelling error, by self-correcting & editing during their written work.  There are some Y6 spelling rules on the national curriculum that are taught in isolation, like homophone work and plural apostrophe work.  If you wish to help your child with spelling at home, please practise the following words, taken from the word list from the national curriculum for Y5&6.

Reading

In year 6, reading is taught 4 x per week for 30 minutes.  We teach reading with a reciprocal approach, giving the pupils different roles (predictor, clarifier, questioner and summariser), which promotes independence and maximum involvement from pupils, rather than sessions being teacher led.

In addition, pupils will hear a class novel at least 3 times per week, as well as having access to the library every week to choose a book for pleasure.

We also have target time once per week, where pupils who require some targeted intervention in reading, are read with and this is recorded in a home/ school diary.

 P.E.

Class 6BM’s PE sessions are on a Wednesday and Thursday.  PE kit is white t-shirt, black shorts and trainers or PE shoes.  If you don’t have this, casual sport clothes are also acceptable.  We ask that pupils bring their PE kit into school on the first Monday of the half term and leave it in school for the full half term.  This is to ensure they always have their kit for their regular lessons, as well as being prepared for any last minute opportunities to work with a sport coach or complete a practical lesson outside, for example.
